Herbs for Athletic Performance

Below are the three herbal formulas that I take before every workout to increase performance. These herbs offer an effective boost to help hit it hard whether at the gym, out for a run, rock climbing, or punching the bags. They are rich in adaptogens and antioxidants and have been proven effective in a great many areas of health, vitality and wellness. I'm not going to go into great detail about all of the benefits proven by research, but just hit the highlights of each.

The first and most important is the single herbs Cordyceps Mushroom Extract by Root2 (also known and Dong Chong Xia Cao in Chinese Medicine). This powerfully tonifying herb has historically been used by Chinese olympic athletes. It's a great herb for strengthening and detoxifying the lungs. Rich in antioxidants, it has also been shown to be good for the heart with adaptogenic qualities to help with stress. The Cordyceps mushroom is actually a parasitic fungi that grows on the head of caterpillars in nature. The herb, however, is grow in a rice biomass for our consumption.

Second up, Cordyceps Power CS-4 by Planetary Herbals. This formula contains Cordyceps as well as a few other herbs, most notably Eleuthero (or Siberian Ginseng). Adaptogenic and also rich in antioxidants, this powerful herb gives a boost of clean energy and helps the body heal from injury and wounds. Astragalus Root (Huang Qi) is included, and has been shown to support the immune system and heart and lung health.

Finally, Maca Tribulus Fenugreek by Natural Sport. The marketing behind this and other similar products is that it will naturally increase your testosterone levels. I think this a load of crap, truth be told, but adding this to my herbal cocktail proved a significant contribution to giving me a powerful boost at the gym. Whether it has had an affect on my T levels is up for debate and of no concern to me. It also contains some Cordyceps, which reinforces the importance and power of this little herb.

I take three of each of the above formulas about thirty minutes prior to any workout with a large glass of water. And I usually slug a small, yet strong, cup of coffee before the gym as well.

Each of the names of the formulas above are linked to where you can purchase these items a VitaCost.com. I have been ordering from this company for many years and am very pleased with the quality and price of their products.
